Your Complete Guide to Saline Tattoo Removal

Your Complete Guide to Saline Tattoo Removal

Saline Removal is a non-laser tattoo removal procedure that uses saline to draw pigment out of the skin. It’s great for lightening or fully removing tattoos or unwanted Permanent Makeup. Due to its natural nature, Saline Removal is ideal for removing PMU. It leaves little to no scarring, and new PMU can be added over the top of the area that was previously lightened, allowing your clients to have the PMU they originally desired. If you have clients who are unhappy with their PMU (eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner) or body tattoos, Saline Removal is for them!

Things I Love About Saline Removal as a Permanent Makeup Artist!

  • Natural and Vegan: The saline solution is made from water, salt, and other natural ingredients, safely removing pigments.
  • Effective on All Colors: Saline does not recognize color, so it removes all pigments, including white.
  • Comfortable for Clients: Most clients report that this is the most comfortable tattoo removal procedure. Numbing is used at your convenience!
  • Fast and Effective: Saline Removal tends to be faster compared to other removal procedures.
  • Removes Stubborn PMU: Saline Removal can tackle even the most stubborn unwanted cosmetic tattoos, whether clients are unhappy with the shape or color of their PMU.

Removal Methods and Why Saline is the Best Option for PMU

Saline Tattoo Removal is on its way to being the best Permanent Makeup Removal option. Many clients approach me, saying they’ve been waiting for their PMU to fade naturally so they can get a better quality of work. Fortunately, most PMU work will fade faster than a typical body tattoo. However, the skin cell turnover cycle isn’t always predictable, so everyone experiences different retention depending on their cell turnover cycle, skin type, lifestyle, etc. It could take years or even decades for PMU to lighten naturally over time. Who wants to wait that long when there’s a way to safely and naturally remove pigment and get your desired results sooner?

There are many methods for slow "natural" lightening like sun exposure, topical products (fading creams), chemical peels, dermabrasion, etc. However, these options can damage the skin with little results. Lasers are another popular removal method, but lasers might not be ideal for PMU removal. Laser removal uses intense light that breaks pigment into pieces, which can cause the PMU to turn black or grey, requiring more sessions. Lasers also may cause complications, especially on the face. Microblading saline removal is a better choice for eyebrows as laser removal may lead to hair loss or scar tissue.

Saline tattoo removal is a great, natural way to draw pigment out of the skin through the theory of osmosis. Saline lifts the pigment to the surface, forming a scab that locks in the lifted pigment. Once the scab falls off, some of the pigment comes with it. Saline can remove all colors, including pigment that has been oxidized by lasers. This method is also typically less painful and faster than other removal methods.

How To Get The Most Out of Your Saline Removal Process

Saline Removal can be a time-consuming process for clients unhappy with their PMU, but consistency is key. It is common for saline removal to take anywhere between 3-6 sessions, depending on factors like skin type, pigment saturation, and the age of the PMU. Removal must be done at least 8 weeks apart to allow the skin to fully heal.

How Long Does Saline Removal Take?

Saline removal typically takes 3-6 sessions, depending on how saturated the pigment is and how long the PMU has been in place. Heavily saturated PMU or tattoos that have been on the skin for 5+ years might need more sessions than lighter, more faded PMU.

Consistency Is Key!

Consistency is vital when it comes to saline removal. After each session, follow the aftercare instructions to ensure the best results. Skin healing and removal depend on proper post-care. At around week 4 after a session, check in with your client to assess healing and decide if another session is needed.

Don’t Wait, Start Now!

If clients start the removal process now, they could have new brows within a year. While some may think a year is a long time, it’s a small price to pay for getting the PMU they desire!

What to Expect When Healing from Saline Tattoo Removal

The healing process for Saline Removal tends to be easy and painless. The theory of osmosis is at play as the saline draws pigment to the surface of the skin. After 7-14 days, scabs will form and begin to fall off, removing pigment along with them. Clients must avoid picking at the scabs during this process to ensure optimal results. Healing time takes about 8 weeks before another session can be performed.

As always, proper aftercare is essential for the best results. Saline Removal is natural, safe, and one of the least painful removal methods available. Numbing cream ensures comfort during the procedure, and I’ve been amazed by the results!
